				As a pure guess..... they generate the warp field acting like poles.

				Yes they create the "Warp field" that alows a ship to go to warp.

				I read that whilst external nacelles make a ship go faster they also weaken the shields as they have to cover a wider area, suggesting that starfleet has gone for speed rather than defence. so i read anyway....

				Ok warp necells make the starship go to warp and make a stable warp bubble around the starship and and pertect the starship from taring its self apart
