I guess I would, but only after having a huge experience as crewmember. Mh, I think that captain Janeway could be my model for such an assignment: before becoming Voyager's captain, she served as science officer on another vessel, and this surely helped her developing her skills as future captain.

Yes, not a Starfleet vessel though. Think 'custom-built hull' and 'lots of illegal goodies'.
