Wed Mar 05, 2008 11:48 pm Would Voyager have returned home faster under Chakotay? |
|
I'm fairly certain I'm going to lose this argument due to most peoples' love of Janeway, but it is my belief that Chakotay would have ended up getting the crew home faster had he been in charge rather than Janeway.
A prime example of this would be from Scorpion, pt 2. The Borg wanted oyager to go back 40 light years into their terrority to rendezvous with a cube to continue work on the weapon vs. 8472. Chakotay refused and when Janeway awoke from her coma or whatever she had, she stated she would have done it.
Would Chakotay have blown up the caretaker's array?
Would Chakotay have spent so much time dabbling with 2 Ferengi on a planet and let the worm hole they found close in on them?
To quote the Doctor: "Why pretend we're going home at all? All we're really going to do is investigate every cubic millimeter of this quadrant, aren't we?"
Chakotay seemed less like an explorer and more like a goal oriented man. He knew what had to be done and would find the most efficient way to get it done while keeping the crew safe.

Well, Janeway was a science officer at one point. And Starfleet is better off with all the data Voyager acquired.
IMO, Voyager has the widest range of script quality of any ST series. There are a few episodes where each of the main characters look really bad.
I blame bad quality control, not Janeway herself.

By the same token, Chakotay was interested just as much in anthropology as Janeway was in science. I think he would have stuck around, just for different reasons.

It might have, while he did like to explore, he definitely was not into some of Janeways decisions. Several times, when he protested, for legitimate reasons, her response was to relive him of duty and place him in his quarters or brig. In any case, it's doubtful he'd have allowed more then the necessary stops to be made, and when a chance to get home came up He'd have probably exploited it.

Starfleet in general may have enjoyed having the data, but what about all the crewmembers who lost their lives in incidents where perhaps a different judgement could have rendered a better outcome? What about the families of those unfortunate weekly expendable ensigns?
There's no doubting that the two of them were good friends, but they definitely did not see eye to eye in a lot of decisions in which Chakotay, it seemed, would have preferred to have kept on trekking. When he was a leader of the Maquis, I'm sure he learned that often your personal interests had to be put off to the side for the good of everyone else unlike Janeway's "This is too good an opportunity to pass up" mentality.

He might have ended up getting them home faster, but then again, would he even have been able to get them home at all?

Yes, definitly. There were many opportunities when they could have gone home, but self-righteous Janeway decided to do otherwise.
You pointed out the episode "Scorpion". Chakotay urged Janeway not to side with the Borg. What did Janeway do? Sided with them. What ended up happening? Countless species, hoping Species 8472 would win, were the assimilated. All so VOY could get through Borg space. She's heartless.
Chakotay knew when to quit and he knew when to fight. He was the captain of a rag tag group of rebels against a superior force (Cardassians-Federation) and kept his people alive. Janeway was always on a comfortable Starfleet starship. He's clearly the superior captain.

I think that if Chakotay had been captain 1 of 2 things would have happened...
1) They would have gotten home faster
or
2) They would have gotten blown up before they got home.
I can't remember specifics but it seems to me there was a bunch of episodes where Janeway did some negotiating to get them out of tight spots that I don't know if Chakotay could have done. So I think he would have gotten them home faster if they didn't get blown up first...

I say they wouldn't have. He was just as much as an explorer as Janeway was. He might not have destroyed the Cartakers Array. So they might get home faster.

I don't believe Chakotay would have gotten them home at all. In a couple episodes he suggested to Janeway they find a habitable planet, so they can at least be safe from whatever drama they were going through. I think he was too quick to give up.

I think Chakotay would have stuck around too. Also think that he'd have got Voyager blown up, probably just me but never really thought he had much of a backbone, would have pretty much given in to seska dna the Kazon IMO

I'm gonna have to say yes, in the fact that he wouldnt have stopped all over the place, but i doubt he'd of gone back in time like we saw janeway do in Endgame. He's alot less curious about everything, more of a live and let live attitude

Quoting Chakotay, exactly:
"Do you realize that if this was a Maquis ship, we'd be home already?"
'nuff said.

To be honest, I don't think that Chacotay would have gotten voyager back home any faster or even survived in the delta quadrant. So many events that janeway had to either compromise (borg/species 8472/kazon/krenim time ship/ Time displacements earth/ captain braxton/ endgame with admiral janeway/ Equinox aliens/ void/borg queen that was fasinated with Janeway and the crew) or beg to stay alive and move on.

How would it have been the same if in several episodes he said that he wouldn't have made the same choice Janeway made?

Possibly. If he didn't stop for everything like Janeway, yeah they would.

After more consideration I would have to say yes he would have. I mean, just look how many times in the series Janeway goes off the deep end and he has to save the day. lol
Just two examples: Night and Equinox

I dont know if he would have or not. and also I don't think having him take over voyager would have even been an option, so for it to be up to him to be captain, then voyager woulda had to of been destroyed instead of hist ship, so wether he gets them home faster or not, i would say he would not of gotten voyager blown up since he would not be captain of it.....
edit: well i guess theres always that chance he could have started a mutiny and took over voyager like in the episode were they were playing tuvoks holodeck program that he started making to train for the chance of it happening. then he could have gotten voyager blown up, lol.
