even though Arellia has already welcomed me to STV, i just wanted to officially introduce myself to the rest of the forum.

my name is Calvin as you may have already guessed. i'm 23 years old and i've lived in Southern California for most of my life although i was born in Taiwan.

i am a graphic designer and web developer (freelance at the moment), though i am also interested in computer science in general and would like to go back to school to get my degree in CS and hopefully go on to study CS in grad school.

i enjoy studying philosophy, sociology, as well as politics. i consider myself a progressive/secular humanist and i try to be open minded at all times. i also enjoy talking to people with different backgrounds/views so that i can gain new perspectives and challenge my own assumptions.

aside from that, i also like all kinds of music, from Poison the Well, to Pink Floyd, to Talib Kweli, to Sigur Ros, to Infected Mushroom.

i also like to read and do a little writing of my own (angst-filled emo poetry, mostly) though i'm not very good. and i also like sci-fi, obviously.

did i also mention i'm very loquacious?

Philosophy and computer science. Very cool. ^.^ If you haven't checked out World News, that's where the more political/philosophical discussions take place here abouts. Did you take classes, or do you just study on your own? I happen to have a minor in philosophy... mostly because if I didn't have it as a class I wouldn't make enough time for it. Being into philosophy, you might enjoy the book Illusions by Richard Bach, if you haven't read it. It's a short read, but the message is pretty interesting.

Welcome!

And I like Talib Kweli, too.

thanks! yea i don't listen to a lot of hip-hop, but Talib Kweli is amazing.

Arellia:
i did check out World News and wanted to comment on some of the threads but i wasn't able to because i don't have special privileges or something. maybe it's because i'm still new here?

and i've taken a few philosophy courses at my old school, UIUC, as well as one at the local community college, but mostly i just study on my own. the classes i took were all introductory courses that basically just went over the classics like Immanuel Kant, Plato/Socrates, Hume, John Stuart Mill, etc.

in my personal studies i've been more interested in stuff like Post-Marxist political philosophy. i've read a lot of stuff by Antonio Gramsci, and i'm also quite fond of Guy Debord's work with the Situationist International.

i'll check out that book you recommended next time i go to the library or if i can find it on the internet. i'm not in school right now, and i don't really have many friends who share my interest in philosophy so i'm not exposed to a lot of philosophical works unless i happen to come across something that sounds interesting while surfing wikipedia (i probably waste 10-15 hours a week on that site). so let me know if you have any other recommendations.

anyways, i'll see you guys around.

Political philosophy is one of those areas I haven't looked into, actually. I've brushed over some of Marx, Jefferson, and Moussilini just for the heck of it, but never anything else. Would like to look into more of it.

If you ask to join the World News usergroup, you should be accepted and able to post.

well, i tried to join the World News usergroup, so hopefully i'll be able to join the discussions there soon.

and i've only heard a couple of songs by N.E.R.D. (i think one of them was called Dirty Dog, or something like that) i think he's pretty good, but the only mainstream hip-hop i listen to regularly is stuff by Tupac/Biggie, and especially Outkast--and Rage Against The Machine if you consider them hip-hop (at least Zach de la Rocha's vocals). aside from that, i've also been getting into Nerdcore, like MC Frontalot.
