I found this website the other day that listed the top 100 sci-fi tv shows. All of the star treks were on there. When you clicked on each name it would have a short write up about it. The DS9 one said DS9 was basically a Soap Opera in space. and you know...i actually agree with that now i think back to some of the episodes i remember.

Perhaps thats what they mean in all the reviews when they say "DS9 is a different kind of Star Trek"

and contrary to most of the other Trek it actually had a story line

(I think that's what made those guys count it as Soap)

Yeah it was a soap but that is part of it's charm.

When it was airing on TV in Australia I could not talk to anyone or read a fan based publication without criticising the series.

The reason was that most people wanted a ship travelling through space.

But I have always thought of it as the best series and will until something else comes along that is better (boy I can not wait).

And all those people who thgought I was crazy for liking it are now saying it is the best of all the series.

I guess you don't know what you have until it is gone.

You know I must agree…

It had all the classic symptoms of a soap, without the weirdness that accompanies most daytime dramas. I actually loved the fact that DS9 was a story in itself… and I loved how you really got to know the characters personally, and how you grew to love them. I am sorry but on a ship you just don’t get the candor, and familiarity that being in one spot can offer.

I think the word Space Opera comes to mind. But I remember someone saying that DS9 was not true Star Trek and I was like...uh what is "true" Star Trek then? It's just going in directions that other series haven't really done.
