Did Jeri Ryan really ruin Voyager? I don't think so, since Voyager was never a truly great show to begin with, she replaced a dull character that was not working and she was best actress in the entire series. And people who think Jeri Ryan was a terrible actress are amongst the most annoying and brainless wastes of flesh polluting the Trek talk forums today.

And so what that she disrupted Voyager's rather pathetic cast ensemble? Maybe it was not the cast members fault (especially in Jennifer Lien and Ethan Philip's case) but the other characters never really engaged me the same way Seven of Nine did. And the only other characters I liked nearly as much as Seven was the EMH, Torres and perhaps Tuvok. And people b*tched and moaned about the overuse of Seven, but the EMH and Torres had a lot of episodes as well. And there were many episodes in the later seasons where Seven was little seen.

That sort of BS is said far too often by the autisitic reprobates at Trek BBS.

There really is no need for that. Next time, try making your post just a tad bit nicer, or it might be considered trolling.

I don't think she ruined Voyager, but I don't really think she made it all that more engaging, either. The first three seasons of a show (unless it's marketed really well and has a large budget) aren't usually as good as the later seasons. I'll admit that Voyager seemed to get better after Jennifer Lien left and Jeri Ryan joined the cast, but I don't feel that either of those things had much to do with the improvement of Voyager.

And just in case: let's not make turn this into another love/hate Kes vs. love/hate Seven topic. Thanks.

The Show was already spiraling downhill. They brought her on to try and get the teen boy ratings by having a Barbie. The only difference that she brought was afew more seasons. The Series would have ended soon if she didn't join.

I don't think she was needed at all on the show, but they had already wrecked the Borg so why not put another nail in their coffin.

Ok, I'll tone it down on the seething bile from now on, so I'll come across to other posters a little better. Being a troll is more trouble than it's worth.

I don't think she was another nail in the coffin as such, since she was not really true Borg after being freed from the collective; they could've had Seven on the show and also pulled back on the Borg so they wouldn't be sullied by the overuse that they had suffered so dearly from in the later seasons. I can't really tell what Voyager would've been like if Seven hadn't joined and it probably would've been cancelled altogether or it would've kept on going downhill in story quality regardless.

And although I liked Jennifer Lien and did not particularly hate Kes, I was still pretty indifferent to her departure. And I felt Voyager's weak story scripts did far more damage to show than Jeri Ryan or even her Seven of Nine character ever did.

I agree. She's an amazing actress if we can find the time to look beyond her pretties. She did a great job of that-Borg-that-longs-to-be-normal-again... I mean, you really understood that from her and that's the hardest part in playing characters like that- showing, not telling. Not to mention her work when Seven got new personalities or had to act like the Doctor or something. She did a great job there. I don't think I could see anyone else on the cast besides Picardo being able to pull multiple personalities like that off.

TNG had Troi,
DS9 followed with Dax but then needed Leeta,
VOY brought in 7/9, resulting in...
ENT starting right out of the gate with a half-naked T'Pol

talk about you basic bio-stimulation and recognition pattern...

DS9 didn't "need" Leeta. What is it with fans and failing to see that trek has always done this? Your list is semi acuate though, like many tend to do though TOS has not been mentioned.

TOS
Uhura
Chapel
Rand
Alien female of the week
Un named female crew members

Am I missing anything?

LOL...no, I think you about covered it. I think that TOS actually did it more so than the other series. Yes, the other series of course did it, but it's almost as though TOS did it more...I think at least...

I intentionally left out TOS, because I found that there were several non-regulars across many episodes that really caught the eye a hell of a lot better (IMO) than the regulars did

Jeri Ryan didn't ruin Voyager but her character got too much screen time and it was wrong to kick out Kes to make room for Seven Of Nine.

Lol I liked here when she was drunk... and personally she did splendid acting as a Borg trying to be human, that cold stare of her that slowly opened... she did make it more interesting but she didnt run the show. She was a "addition" to the story something to make it a bit more interesting. Still I think it would be a good idea to keep Kes in a little longer and see her control her psychic abilities more. I thought it was a lame end how Kes left.

I think the addition of 7/9 made Voyager better - it took the show to another level, bringing in new storylines, introducing exciting technology etc.

However, that being said, I think that Kes & Seven would have made one helluva team. I mean, a Borg and a telepath! They gave up a lot of potentially great storylines by getting rid of Kes and not one of the "normal and human bridge officers" :o)

I think the 7 of 9 character was a positive addition to the show. Jeri Ryan portrayed the character well, however, I think that it was unneccessary to have Jeri Ryan wear quite so "efficient" clothing.

Seven of nine was a pivotal character for STV, without her introduction the series would have seriously gone off the rails.

The arrival of 7 meant that the writers could explore new sides of the existing characters as well as open up a whole new aspect of looking at the human psyche, at least trying to see it from 7's point of view of re-humanising.

The amount of interest that character generated outside of the traditional trekkie watchers, helped the series revive.

Life without seven........................

I don't know. I had in my mind just recently to watch all of the Voyager episodes staright through again. I just finished the 3rd season and am losing interest. Don't get me wrong, seasons 4-7 were fantastic...they just don't hold up to as many viewings as seasons 1-3. Since the big difference between those two groups was the leaving of Kes and the addition of 7 of 9, I'd say that that is likely the reason. Jeri Ryan did not ruin Voyager...her character just made it a little bit not as good (if that makes any sense).

Funny, my own experience was exactly the opposite. I zipped through season 1 and the first couple episodes of season 2 watching 2 or 3 episodes a night. Then it was all I could do to get through the rest of season 2 and season 3.

In season 4, I was back to watching episodes back-to-back.

I found I was falling asleep during season 3. Didn't happen from season 4 on.
